Rectangle Silk Veils and Voi |
||||
There
is perhaps no other bellydance accessory more
basic and versatile than the silk veil. No other dance prop can
provide the dancer with as much creative, visual
variety as the silk veil. It is probably
the easiest, most affordable way to change the
appearance of your costume. Dancing with a
rectangle veil is one of the basic parts of a
dance routine..it is almost expected that a
performing dancer will accomplish a certain
level of competency with a veil.
Silk veils make this all the more
fun. Nothing in the world moves like
silk. Audiences are left breathless
watching the dancer float by as if on clouds
with a trail of rippling silk behind her.
There is something magical and ethereal about
the way silk moves. Some believe it is
like a moving meditation. Others practice
it.
Veils are used by many
different kinds of people in many
settings. Bellydancers enjoy them for
performance, as do theater companies, health and
healing classes, metaphysical workshops,
children at play or simply the solo dancer who
dances with the wind for her own enjoyment.
One of the best written articles about veil dance and its history can be found on Shira's bellydance site (www.shira.net) at http://www.shira.net/veilhistory.htmA colorful silkveil can dramatically change the appearance and mood of your costume. Dancers can use their imaginations to pair up lively colors. Veils are like shoes, you must own enough for all of your outfits or costumes :)

Rectangle veils are available in various sizes. The standard size silk veil measures 3 yards long by 45 inches wide, however veils can be made longer or shorter to the dancer's preference. A lightweight 5 or 6 mm habotai silk is recommended for silk rectangles for maximum float and show stopping appearance. Many rectangle veils are made unhemmed and will not unravel over time. Hemmed or rolled edge veils are available on occasion. Rectangle veils are also available in smaller sizes such as 84 X 35 inches. This size is perfect for poi, or voi..the attaching of silk veils to weights on leashes. For more about veil poi, and how to learn to dance with them, visit http://www.cheekygirlsproductions.com/catalog/poi.html Smaller square size veils are made for spinners or to use as worship flags by church groups. Ultra wide silk veils are extra wide and are beautiful for theatrical work and stage performances.
